Formulate Cannabis Extract NanoemulsionsOne of the first concerns when you are formulating oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions is the stability of the finished product. An O/W nanoemulsion can destabilize due to many physical, chemical or bological processes that deteriorate its quality in time. Understanding this and avoiding these processes is very important to making sure that products that are based on cannabis extract nanoemulsions (“water-soluble” THC and CBD) have long and measurable shelf-life. Below, typical nanoemusion destabilization pathways are described, along with effective ways  to avoid them.

Oil phase separation due to creaming/sedimentation, flocculation and/or Ostwald ripening

Oil phase separation from an O/W nanoemulsion may take place:  1) when buoyancy or forces caused by gravity on suspended oil droplets make them float/sink (creaming/sedimentation) and, ultimately, come range of each other),  2) because of  attractive iterations between the droplets (flocculation) and/or  3) as the result of droplets of larger sizes’ growth at the expense of smaller ones (Ostwald ripening).
